Experience exchange program "INNOVATION, INVENTION AND YOUTH”

From 17 to 30  July  employees of  NCAMC “Mystetskyi Arsenal”, Charitable Foundation “Mystetskyi Arsenal”, NGO  “Ukrainian Center for Museum Development” and "ART-Ukraine" Magazine participated in the program "Innovations, Inventions and Youth ", organized by the Embassy of the United States with the support of the U.S. State Department.

Within this program participants visited more than 40 museums and institutions in the United States of America (Washington, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle).

In Washington representatives of Ukrainian group had meetings with the commissioner for relations with Ukraine, U.S. State Department Daniel Falk and with representatives of the American Association of Museums.
The leading experts of the San Francisco Arts Commission and the Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs, City of Seattle shared their unique practical experience of urban development with the stress on art and culture activities with the team of “Mysteskyi Arsenal”.

The group was honoured to have a fruitful and effective meeting with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the United States of America - Olexander Motsyk and secretary of the Embassy of Ukraine in the United States of America - Victor Voloshin.

Warm welcome for the Ukrainian delegation was organized by Ukrainian Diaspora in the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art in Chicago. As the result of the meeting it was agreed on planning cooperation in joint Ukraine-U.S. art projects and spreading of  information in the United States and Ukraine on the activities of “Mysteskyi Arsenal” and the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art in Chicago respectively.

Program participants met with leading specialists of museums and representatives of organizations which support the development of culture and art in the United States.

As a result of the meetings the representatives of the Ukrainian delegation exchanged experiences, got familiar with features of activities and development programs of U.S. museums, learn about state support of museum institutions, NGOs, foundations, patrons, and the ways of raising funds for the development and current activities of museums.

In the U.S. charity support of museums is traditional and very popular, its forms quite extensive - from individual and corporate support (in the U.S. there is a system of museum membership or special clubs of patrons membership) to support by both private and public funds. In particular, the amounts collected annually by museums and galleries from patrons and donors, are impressive. The Metropolitan museum of Art has 140,000 members and collects more than $ 100 million per year, the Museum of Modern Art has more than 100 thousand members, the Guggenheim Museum - 10 thousand members, collects $ 25 million per year, the National Building Museum - $ 8 million per year. Even a small museum, with several hundred members of the museum, can collect from donors at various levels of about $ 1 million per year. Supporting the arts and to take active part in the life of museums is a very honourable mission for both citizens and corporations and U.S. companies.

Participants of  the "Innovation, invention, youth" program had the opportunity to learn about special educational, gaming, entertainment programs for children and family programs organized by museums in the United States.

Great attention was paid to the program SPARK LAB, which aims to promote innovation thinking of children through games and tasks, as well as art. The program will be implemented in Ukraine at “Mystetskyi Arsenal” in 2012. 10 interactive research stations will be brought to Ukraine, and through game and entertainment within a specially equipped area children can develop their interest in inventions and research activities.

The program «You Media Project» is also very promising for implementation in Ukraine, according to which permanent operated center for young people is constructed with the electronic library, modern computer facilities, playgrounds, sound and electronic musical instruments.

The visit to “The Exploratorium” led to great admiration of Ukrainian group. “The Exploratorium” - is a unique research museum, which gathered a large number of unique exhibits which are equally interesting to study for both children and adults.
